Partimos do princípio que a dupla ‘ciência – arte’ faz parte essencial destes projectos e da perspectiva que vai sendo traçada, no Ocidente, a partir de meados de setecentos. A ciência e o mundo experimental dependendo dos factos e da realidade, a criatividade artística e estética criando factos e gerando realidade. Este entrosar de natureza essencialmente inventiva, ainda que mais ou menos referencial, sucede às teo-semioses que entendiam o universo com um dado adquirido e (sempre e já) por si explicado. Dois modos de significar a vida que se cruzam lentamente e que espelham o modo como o homem se vai impondo como sujeito criador ao longo da modernidade.

Contudo, as primeiras teorizações da arte e da estética e posteriores aprofundamentos (associados a aspectos como a criação, a inspiração, a imaginação, etc.) mantiveram um vínculo profundo (por vezes invisível) com formas espirituais de significar o mundo. Para C. Baudelaire, a conquista do belo – o primeiro grande elemento da estética – continua a situar-se na linha da ancestral “cultura da promessa” , do mesmo modo que, para W. Kandisky, a consciência da criação artística é uma “operação” associada ao “novo Reino do Espírito” . Este é um tema capital que perseguiremos neste livro, sobretudo na sua primeira parte, e que se desdobrará, depois, à fundação da própria estética no séc. XVIII, às codificações românticas e a várias outras consideradas relevantes (I. Kant, G. Hegel, M. Heidegger, etc.).

Na segunda parte do livro analisaremos algumas noções de criação artística (incluindo o seu legado gnóstico), para além de outras ideias contíguas, como são o “génio” de I. Kant e a renovação pressuposta pelo “acto criativo” de M. Duchamp (um dos porta-vozes de um conjunto de inovações do séc. XX no campo da criatividade artística, nomeadamente o papel do público, as funções da criação enquanto processo e sobretudo a abertura ao estético traduzida através de um conjunto de relações construtoras que ligam o artista ao mundo). Na terceira parte, passaremos para o nível dos discursos, colocando, por um lado, em evidência as práticas intertextuais e paródicas, centrais na cultura do séc. XX e na actualidade, e, por outro lado, analisando a morfologia e a génese de uma linguagem moderna que se tornou no símbolo maior do século passado: o cinema.
