Moerenhout vond een kaart waarop de keizer ontsnappingsroutes aanbracht, ontdekte een complot om hem te bevrijden en kwam te weten dat Napoleon vermoedelijk vergiftigd werd door de guy van zijn minnares. Daarnaast vertelt Moerenhout de verhalen van andere gevangenen, onder wie de Nederlandse drugssmokkelaar die in 1994 als enige van het eiland wist te ontsnappen, naar eigen zeggen met behulp van zelfgemaakte sleutels en een provisorisch bootje, maar het blijkt anders te zitten.

Laatste boot naar Sint-Helena is een onderhoudend reisboek vol historische ‘wist-ik-nietjes’ en spannende anekdotes.
